Recycling
Did you know that when you toss out one aluminum can, you waste as much energy as if you’d filled the same can half-full of gasoline and poured it into the ground?
Recycling saves in so many ways. Unfortunately, recycling can be equally confusing in so many ways. Most containers are supposed to have a number between one and seven labeled on them to indicate what kind of recyclable they are. But, sometimes those numbers are hard to find, or non existent. According to the Yavapai County Contractors Association, here is a list of what those recycling numbers mean:
1. Water, soda, juice and shampoo bottles and peanut butter jars.
2. Bleach containers, milk and water jugs, laundry detergent containers and cleaning products.
3. Medicine bottles.
4. Grocery bags and plastic wrap.
5. Food containers, tubs and plastic squeeze bottles.
6. Styrofoam containers.
7. Five-gallon water and sport water bottles.
Other items that are recyclable:
Aluminum Cans, glass bottles, glass jars, empty aerosol cans, paper bags, cereal boxes (with the liner removed), newspapers, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, phone books, and cardboard (no pizza boxes).
Items that cannot be recycled:
Batteries, soiled paper plates, plastic grocery bags or dry cleaner plastic.
The Mileage of a Note
In the age of technology, sadly the written word seems to be extinct. Remember yesterday when you were at the mail box hoping that there was a real letter in the cubby hiding between all of the bills and solicitations. A cute little envelope with a handwritten address would have put a spring in your step. Instead, it was another day of the same ‘ol stuff.
There are numerous times that a Thank You cards is necessary, but there are even more times when one is not expected and would be a welcomed surprise to the recipient. Remember when your hair lady took time to style your hair just right because you had a meeting to go to, when the coach on your child’s team stayed after a little longer and worked with your child one on one, or when the cashier at your favorite store went out of their way to help you. Those acts of kindness present great opportunities to say ‘Thank You.’ All it takes is a little investigation to find a mailing address or a glance at the name tag of your waitress and you have all of the information you need to carry out your mission.
A dear mentor to me once shared that the standard question in their house was ‘Are there any letter letters?’ Take a moment to send someone a personal greeting and to possibly make their day a little brighter. |
